Story: Joni Mitchell, born Roberta Joan Anderson, is a lifelong artist and musician who discovered her creative nature while recovering from polio in late 1952, when she was nine. As a promising art student who sang in cafes for pocket money, an unexpected pregnancy compelled her to abandon school and escape to Toronto, where her daughter was born in 1965. She soon met and married fellow folk singer Chuck Mitchell in hopes that they would raise her child together, but his reluctance and their meager earnings meant giving her up for audition, a choice that would haunt her in the years to come. She and Mitchell toured as a duo for two years, before they split and she went on her own, quietly crafting her own material that would soon attract the attention of other great singers in search of new songs. Her debut album, released in 1968, became an instant classic, presenting a new breed of acoustic music that moved beyond the limitations traditional folk music, with lyrics that were more honest and personal than pop music had allowed until that time. Mitchell was a major commercial sensation in the late 60s and early 70s, but gradually slowed down her musical output as her fan base shrank in the face of the jazzier direction her music took from the late 70s onward. During the mid-1990s, as the story of her adopted child became public knowledge, Mitchell remained curious about the daughter she had given up, and the two were finally reunited in 1997.
