Introduction and Life Events

Story: Legendary comedian and actor Richard Pryor was a unique and still-visible influence on both stand-up and television comedy, but at the great personal cost of his own health and sanity. Pryor’s personal demons were well-known to his audience, as many of his worst experiences became fodder for some of his best comedy material. In fact, Pryor’s life appeared to become far more tragic at the same time his career hit its greatest peaks. A brief marriage in 1977 ended after less than four months, during an argument in which Pryor fired a gun at his own car, leading him further into depression and even attempted suicide. He rebounded in time to direct an autobiographical film, Jo Jo Dancer Your Life Is Calling, but sadly contracted multiple sclerosis around that same time. As his health slowly stopped his career, however, he was able to use his gifts to give his tragedy meaning for others.

Stars: Pryor was born with natal Venus, Mars and Mercury in Scorpio opposite Jupiter retrograde, Saturn retrograde and Uranus retrograde in Taurus, signifying his conflicted nature and unique gift for comedy. Astrology demonstrates how planetary transits to his natal opposition coincided with important turning points in his life.
